Aadi Amavasya
The Amavasya (New Moon Day) that occurs in the Tamil month of Aadi is known as Aadi Amavasya.
It is the most powerful
day to offer tarpanam to ancestors
It is believed that on
Aadi Amavasya, spirits are more willing to accept the offerings and are
satisfied when their successors perform Tarpanam rituals for them.
In addition, every year,
during the month of Aadi, the Sun starts its movement towards the South, which
is called ‘Dakshinayana’ (Dakshin means south, and Ayana means travel).
Since this is the first
New Moon day during this period, it is regarded as the most powerful day for
performing Tarpanam rituals.
It is always best to
perform these ceremonies near a lake, river, pond, or sea.
Must take a holy bath in the sacred river before the tarpanam ritual
A large number of people
usually gather at the Agni Theertham in Rameshwaram.
Other sacred spots
include Triveni Sangamam in Kanyakumari and various holy Ghats on the banks of
River Cauvery.
