Sri Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple - Palakollu

Sri Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple is located in Palakollu in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh State.

It is one of the Pancharama Temple.

The presiding deity of this temple is Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Here Lord is in the form of Lingam with 2 feet height.

The Shiva lingam at Ksheerarama temple is the tallest one and is found unique milky white color.

Sri Adi Sankaracharya installed Sri Chakram in this temple.

It is believed that staying one day in Kshirarama is equivalent to staying one year in Varanasi.

The temple complex has many shrines, for many gods and goddesses like, Surya, Parvati, Lakshmi, Nagareshwara, Ganesha, Veerabhadra, the eight Matrikas, Durga, Brahma, Saraswati, Kartikeya, Bhairava, Nagadeva, Nataraja, Dattatreya, Nageshwara, Shani, Krishna and Radha, and Shiva.

This temple Raja Gopuram measures 120 feet in height with 9 floors, constructed by Sri Alladu Reddy during the 14th Century, and Dhwaja Stambham is placed in front of the temple. During the 17th century, the Kalyana mandapam (choultry) and Astha Bhuja Lakshmi Narayanaswamy Alaya were constructed. There are 72 pillars made of black stone in the temple mandapa. Also inside the garbhalaya, Gokarneshwara and Vigneshwara alayas are situated at the left and Kshiralingam is located in the center.

Upamanyu, the son of sage Kaushik, requested Lord Shiva to grant him enough milk to carry on the temple rituals. Lord Shiva filled the Ksheera Pushkarni Tank with the mythical milky ocean (Ksheera Sagaram). Hence this place is known by different names, Ksheerarama, Palakollu, and Dugdhapovanam.

Lord Ram along with Sita and Lakshman had worshipped Shiva at this spot. Once, Maharishi Agastya told Lord Ram that his complexion had become black after killing Ravana who was a Brahmin. To get rid of the black complexion, Lord Ram was advised to take a dip in the holy river and also install Shiva Lingas. After the installation of various Shiva Lingas, Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana decided to visit the Gosthani River to install Shiva Linga. Goddess Sita had asked Hanuman to acquire it. Hanuman couldn’t arrive on time and Sita made a Shiva Linga containing sand and snails. She did puja for the lingam. When Hanuman saw this, he was disappointed. Hence Lord Ram assured Hanuman that first, devotees would pray in front of the Shiva Linga brought by him and then that of Sita.

This temple was built during the 9th century.

Mahasivaratri is an important festival when thousands offer prayers to seek the blessings of the Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy to attain Mukti.
