Sri Mavullamma Temple - Bhimavaram
Sri Mavullamma Ammavaru temple is situated on Kurisettivari Street
in Gandhi Nagar in the Andhrapradesh town of Bhimavaram in the West Godavari
district. While Puranas claim that Mavullamma's idol first appeared in the year
1200 AD, the lettering on the marble in the temple reads 1880 AD. Mavullamma is
the Gramadevata. The goddess is reported to have appeared at Bhimavaram at a
location now known as Motupalli Veedhi. A location where Neem and Peepal (vepa)
trees were present is where Sri Mavullamma Ammavaru first appeared. Many people
from all over the world came to see her and thought of her as the holy
gramadevatha, who was afterward referred to as "Mavullamma" rather
than "Mamillamma."
Sri Mavullamma Ammavaru appeared in Sri Marella Machi Raju and Sri
Grandhi Appanna's dreams during Vaishaka masam in the year 1880 AD and advised
them to erect a temple where she had previously appeared. They used to pray to
the Goddess in a little hut after they found her. The Sunday Market temple was
constructed by Sri Grandhi Appanna and Sri Marella Machi Raju.
Early in the morning, Bala Bhogam and Sahasra Kumkum Archana will be
done. In the evening, Vedaparayanam, Sahasra Namarchana, and Pancha Harati will
be performed. During Ashada Suddha Pournami, the goddess will be dressed in
sakambari. The goddess will wear a gold-colored saree at the annual event.
