Sri Trimbakeshwar Temple - Trimbak
Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient temple in the
town of Trimbak, in the Trimbakeshwar tehsil in the Nashik District of Maharashtra. It is dedicated to the god Shiva and
is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The origin of the sacred Godavari River is near Trimbak.
The Linga of
Trimbakeshwar temple consists of three heads and is covered with Silver.
The Trimbakeshwar Temple is the only Jyotirlinga where
the actual linga is present in a cavity.
Trimbaka or Trayambaka are the
names of the Linga that is located here. Its three tiny thumb-sized Lingas,
which stand in for Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, give rise to its name.
Additionally, some people think it's because Lord Shiva has three eyes. This
temple was created in the Nagara architectural style and was built facing east.
The temple has a tall Shikhara that is internally square, and this Shikhara has
a giant amalaka, which is a lotus-shaped stone disc with a golden Kalasha
perched atop it. The garbhagriha, the interior most section of any temple where
the Lord resides and has a temple kund, is visible inside the temple. An entire
temple is built with black stones which enhances its architecture. The temple
is edged with around 20-25 stone feet wall in height.
The Trimbakeshwar Temple is
incredibly old. There are three miniature Shivalingas in a small pit inside the
temple. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are the names of these three Shivalingas. The
Trybankeshwar temple is surrounded by the Brahmagiri, Nilgiri, and Ganga Dwar
mountains. Brahmagiri is regarded as Shiva's manifestation. The temple of
Neelambika Devi and Dattatreya Guru is located in the Nilgiri Mountains. On the
Ganges Gate Mountains, there is a temple dedicated to the goddess Godavari or
Ganga. The idol's feet are perpetually dripping water, which fills a nearby
reservoir. The faces of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are typically depicted on the
silver crowns that cover the three lingas. However, on special occasions like
Mahashivaratri, Karthik Purnima, and Dussehra, a golden crown studded with
diamonds and rubies is kept over the three Lingas. It is believed that the
Peshwas donated the crown to the temple and that the crown actually belonged to
the Pandavas.
It is believed that Trimbak
was a land of sages and munis, Gautam Rishi was one of the Rishis who lived
here with his wife Ahilya. The land was struck with a massive drought and so
Gautam Rishi requested the Lord of water God Varuna to solve the problem of
water scarcity. God Varuna accepted his prayers and gave him an unlimited
supply of water. However, the other Rishis became jealous of Gautam Rishi. So,
they prayed to Lord Ganesha to send a cow to Gautam Rishi's field which was
rich with crops. When the cow went to Gautam Rishi's field he tried to frighten
it, but somehow the cow died. After this, he went to Lord Shiva along with his
wife to seek punishment for the crime he committed. Lord Shiva was very pleased
and then he ordered the river Ganga to come down to earth. The river flowed from
Brahmagiri Hill and Gautam Rishi also trapped it in a Kund which is called Kushavarta, then the Rishi requested Lord Shiva to reside there. Accepting his
request the Lord turned into a Linga to stay there.
This temple was built in the year 1755.
