Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple – Uraiyur

Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple is located in Uraiyur in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamilnadu State.

It is called Thirukozhi or Nachiyar Koil

It is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples

It is counted as the second in the line of divyadesams after the Srirangam temple.

Lord Azhagiya Manavala Perumal is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kamalavalli Nachiyar is the consort of Manavala Perumal.

Here lord is in a sitting posture and Kamalavalli Nachiyar faces north. It is only Divya Desam where the goddess faces north.

It is one of the few divyadesams where the goddess has prominence over Vishnu. Some of the other temples where such female dominance is observed are Andal Temple at SrivilliputhurNachiyar Koil, and Pundarikakshan Perumal Temple in Thiruvellarai.

There are separate shrines for Ramanuja and Nammalvar.

This temple was built during the 8th century

It is constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture

This temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram.

It is believed to be the birthplace of Thiruppaan Alwar.

Serthi Sevai, the annual homecoming festival is celebrated in the temple annually during the Ayilyam star in the Tamil month of Panguni. The festival is a part of the Panguni Uthiram festival of Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple when the festival idol of Srirangam temple, Namperumal, is brought to the Nachiyar temple and the images of Nachiyar and Namperumal are adorned in the Serthi hall of the temple. Special rituals are performed during the occasion. The other major festivals celebrated in the temple are Dolostava, Vasanthothsava (spring festival), and Navaratri.
