Pitru Paksha Significance , Pitru Paksha Dates 2024
- Pitru paksha also called Mahalaya Paksha is observed to pay homage to ancestors.
- It is 16 days observed during the month of Bhadrapada Masam in south India, In the north it is observed during Ashwin Month.
- The last day of pitrupaksha is Mahalaya Amavasya or Pitru Amavasya.
- 16 days is inauspicious due to death rites performed in rituals
- This practice is observed to remove any ‘Doshas’ to ensure that the family stays blessed.
- Pinda Daan refers to the ritual of appeasing those who are dead.
- All the rituals must be performed by a Male member of the family, the rituals may vary from one region to another.
- These rituals are mentioned in Hindu Scriptures like Markandeya Purana and Garuda Purana.

- Gaya
- Rameswaram
- Badrinath
- Kapal mochan Sesh Ambadi

Things to do :
- Must be performed by eldest male member of the family
- Observer must take a bath and wear kush grass as a ring.
- For Pind Daan, offering of Sesame seeds, rice, and balls made of barley flour is done
- All the rituals are performed under the guidance of a priest.
- On the day of Pitru paksha (any chosen day) food must be offered to the crow, if it eats it is an auspicious sign. Crow is the messenger of lord yama
- Must read Hindu Scriptures like Agni Purana and Garuda Purana.
Things Not to do :
- Any new activity or new venture must not be started
- Many people will not buy new clothes
- Consuming garlic, Onion and Non-veg food is not allowed
- Auspicious functions like marriages, housewarming ceremonies, and child naming ceremonies must be avoided.
- Haircuts should be avoided during this time.
