Sri Krishna Janmashtami

 


  • Janmashtami, also known as Sri Krishna Janmashtami is the birth celebration of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
  • Lord Krishna was born at midnight on Ashtami tithi under Rohini Nakshatra.
  • In the north it is celebrated in Bhadrapada Masam, whereas in south India it is celebrated in Shravana month.
  • He was eight sons of Vasudev and Yashoda.
  • According to mythology, Krishna was the eighth child of Princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva.
  • Devaki's brother Kansa killed all children that were given birth by Devaki to prevent him from a prediction 
  • Vasudeva took baby Krishna to his friend's house in Gokul, Krishna was brought up by Nanda and his wife Yashoda at Gokul.
  • People across the country celebrate this festival, In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is organized on local and regional scales. 
  • In Uttar Pradesh devotees visit Mathura and Vrindavan on this day.
  • In Gujarat, devotees visit the Dwarakadish temple.
  • Special pujas will take place in all Krishna temples across the country.
  • In eastern India, Nanda ustav is celebrated the next day followed by Janmasthami.
  • People in South India decorate their houses with small footprints made of flour representing the little Krishna.
  • The celebrations in ISKCON temples will reach heights.
