Sri Vellayani Devi Temple - Trivandrum
Vellayani Devi temple is one of the famous ancient
temples of the goddess Bhadrakali as the presiding deity. The idol stands for the goddess Bhadrakali. Goddess Kali is facing the north in
Garbhahriha. The idol of the goddess in the Vellayani temple is one of the
largest among the idols of other Kali temples in Kerala.
The idol’s height and width are four and a half
feet. The front of the idol is decorated with pure gold and beautiful stones.
The Vellayani Devi Temple is well known for
hosting South India's longest non-pilgrimage festival, which lasts for about 65
to 70 days. Every three years, this festival takes place.
According to legend, near Vellayani Lake a Kollan (blacksmith) by the name of Kelan Kulasekhara witnessed a frog carrying the sacred spirit of the Goddess. With the aid of his low caste aide, he managed to catch the miraculous frog. They informed the local Nair chieftains of the situation, and with their assistance, Kulasekhara dedicated the Thiru Mudi (idol), which invokes the heavenly spirit. The Nair family continues to possess the authority to carry out Uchabali, a ceremony associated with a temple celebration. The temple's priest is a chosen member of the Kollan (blacksmith) community, not a member of the Brahmin community.
