Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple - Hamsala Deevi



Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple is located in Hamasala Deevi village, Krishna District. It is on the banks of the Krishna River.

Sri Venugopala Swamy is the presiding deity of this temple. Goddess Rukmini and Satyabhama are the consorts of Venugopala Swamy.

It is among the 180 Sacred Vishnu temples in India.


This temple has a huge Raja gopuram with 5 tiers, Dhwaja Stambham is placed in front of the temple. Hamsala Deevi Venugopala Swamy Temple has a great ancient history dating back to the Pallavas and Chalukyas dynasties. Temple walls were richly carved with the sequences of Ramayana.


As per the folklore, Two Gandharvas while flying over the Krishna delta, they came across a sage who was black in color. Gandharvas made fun of him. The angered sage cursed Gandharvas to become crows. Gandharvas regretted their mistake and pleaded with Sage for the solution. Sage asked them to take a bath in the river Krishna near Hamsaladeevi. As advised they took a bath here and got their actual form as Swan (Hamsa). Hence, the place is popular with Hamsaladeevi.


According to the Puranas, This place is very powerful and also a holy place. So the devatas decided to build a temple of Lord Vishnu. They start building the temple inform of disappearing to Hanuman at night time. After some time they heard cock sound. Then they were disappointed and got back to their world. These stories were more in Puranas about this temple. Another interesting story attached to this place is sages in the form of Swans used to worship the Lord in the night after taking a bath in the river Krishna. Therefore, this place got the name Hamsaladeevi.
