According to the legend, in Tretayuga Madhya was one of the demons in Lanka (now Sri Lanka). But he was an ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman. As he was in enemies kingdom, he could not express his devotion to Lord Hanuma. But Madya wanted to be the part of Lord's Grace at least in this next birth. So he surrendered to Vanaras in the war of Rama and Ravana. Thus Madya blessed by Hanuman manifested himself in the maddi tree.
