Ganga Saptami
Ganga Saptami is observed on the seventh day (Saptami) of the bright fortnight in the month of Baisakhi or Vaisakha. According to Brahma Purana, Ganga Saptami, also known as Jahnu Saptami, is said to be the day Goddess Ganga descended onto the Earth in the Himalayas.
In Haridwar, Rishikesh, and some other regions, Ganga Saptami is celebrated as the day the Ganga River descended from the celestial region onto Lord Shiva’s matted locks and then a few drops of Ganga fell from Lord Shiv’s head onto the Himalayas. While in Kashi (Varanasi), Ganga Jayanti is observed as the day the Ganga River descended from the celestial region to earth, and Ganga Dussehra is regarded as the day when the River Ganges reached the plains of India at Haridwar. According to Brahma Purana, Sage Jahnu released the Ganga through his ear. Ganga Saptami is also known as Jahnu Saptami.
On Ganga, Saptami devotees worship Goddess Ganga and take a bath in the Ganges. Taking a bath in the Ganges on Ganga Saptami day is considered highly auspicious. On the occasion of Ganga Saptami, several pujas and rituals are offered to Goddess Ganga.
