Temples to Visit in Hampi

Hampi is an ancient town in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Located at a distance of 376 kilometers from Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka

Vijaya Vittala Temple

This is probably one of the most famous temples of Hampi. The architecture and craftsmanship of this temple are truly unmatched. Its major attraction is the Chariot-shaped temple, intricate carvings, and the 56, SaReGaMa pillars. The temple dates back to 1422-1446 A.D. under the reign of King Devaraya II of the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

This temple is famous for the fierce avatar of Lord Vishnu sitting on the Sheshnaag, i.e., the seven-headed snake. The sheshnaag acts as a shelter to Narasimha, who is considered to be the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. You will find Goddess Lakshmi’s idol placed along with Narasimha; hence, the temple is named Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. The statue is the biggest monolith in Hampi; therefore, a visit to this temple is a must.

Virupaksha Temple

Also known as Pampapathi Temple, this temple has three towers within its boundaries. The temple has a mix of Jain and Hindu architecture and is one of several Pattadakal temples present in several regions of Karnataka. The walls of the temple have stone inscriptions that show the rich heritage and carvings of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex

This temple complex has several temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located beside the Virupaksha Temple and has a very strong connection with Lord Shiva.
