Sri Gadhkalika Shakti Peeth – Ujjain
Sri Gadhkalika Shakti Peeth is located in Ujjain City of
Madhya Pradesh State.
Goddess Avanti the Presiding deity of this temple, is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati.
Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Lambkarna
Sati Devi’s Lower lips had fallen here and this temple is
one of the 51 Shaktipeeta temples.
The structure of the temple is
made with the use of unique colorful stones. The wall and roof of the temple
are done with magnificent stones and give a picture perfect.
According to history,
Daksha Prajapati, father of Goddess Sati insulted Lord Shiva and Devi Sati by
not inviting them to Daksha Yagna. Goddess Sati was advised not to go to the Yagna
uninvited by Lord Shiva which Devi Sati did not heed and went to the Daksha
Yagna. Her father insulted her and Lord Shiva which hurt Devi Sati so much that
she sacrificed herself in the sacred fire of the Yagna. On hearing this, lord
Shiva got angry and he started dancing in fury to destroy the universe. To
prevent this, Lord Vishnu cut the body of Sati with his Chakra. It was placed
in 51 different parts of the world. That is known as 51 Shakti peethas. In this
temple goddess Sati’s Lower Lip was placed and worshiped as Maa Avantika.
Navratri is the major festival celebrated here with much
fervor that draws thousands of devotees.
