Nagula Chavithi

Nagula Chavithi is an auspicious day to observe Naga Puja. It is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) after Deepavali Amavasya during Karthika Masam. Nag Panchami and Nagasashti are observed after Naga Chaturthi. In some parts of Andhra Pradesh, it is also celebrated in the month of Sravana Masam.

On this day, Naga Devatha is worshipped. In some places, Devotees visit Putta (snake pit) to offer Naivedyam and perform puja. Women observe fasting for the well-being of their families and to protect them from snake bites. Devotees offer milk to Naga Devatha.

The popular legend associated with Nagula Chavithi in Telugu Hindu culture suggests that on the day Lord Shiva drank the poison Halahala or Kalkuta to save the universe during the famous incident of Samudra Manthan. Pujas and prayers are held in Naga temples across the state. The temple of Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh is of great importance, where the serpent is placed in the shrine out of the three elements. Devotees in the shrine carry out Naga Puja or Sarpa Dosha Yagam.

This Festival is mainly Observed in Southern India.
