Sri Vishnu Mandir – Gorakhpur
Sri Vishnu Mandir is
located in Ashok Nagar in Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh State.
Lord Vishnu is the primary
deity which is made up of black stone.
The four corners of the
temple are dedicated to the deities Jaganath Puri, Badrinath, Rameshwaram, and
Dwarka.
It is dated 18 July 1914.
The local Gorakh Mishtri saw a black colored inscription in Pokhara. He used to
sharpen the edge of his hoof on that inscription daily. One day, they thought
why not take this stone home. When he overturned Shilapat, he saw a rare statue
of Lord Vishnu. He cleaned it and took it home. When he was not allowed to keep
this statue in his house, he kept the statue at the house of neighboring Shiva
Pujan Mishtri. The British collector Silat came to know about this. He lifted
the statue from there and kept it in Nandan Bhavan. A few days later, the
collector placed the statue on 15 September 1914 in the Malakhana of the
district. At that time zamindar Rai Bahadur Dharamvir Rai etc. tried to get the
statue of Lord Vishnu back to Nandan Bhavan again. But the British Collector
sent him the statue to Lucknow Museum, disputing it. On 15 February 1915, this
statue was kept in the Lucknow Museum and it was guarded by British officers.
This statue was taken
from here to London and placed in the Royal Museum there. Rani Shyam Sundar
Kumari, the queen of Majhauli State appealed first in the sessions court and
then in the High Court regarding this statute, but her appeal was turned down. Later,
they appealed to the Previ Council where the decision was taken in their favor
and that statue of Lord Vishnu could come back to Gorakhpur on 7 July 1915.
Rani Shyam Sundar Kunwari, her husband late. Built a huge temple on the same
Asuran Pokhara in memory of King Kaushal Kishore Prasad Malla. Here, on May 8,
1922, the quadrangular black-colored test statue of God was established in the
temple. Since then, every year Vishnu Mahayagya has been organized in someone's mind.
This temple was built
during the 11th century.
