Subarnameru Temple – Sonepur

 

Subarnameru Temple is situated in Sonepur town in Subarnapur district of Odisha state.


It is commonly known as the Second Varanasi of India.


Lord Subarnameru Mahadev is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.


The shrine enshrines a Sivalingam within a circular Yonipitha, installed inside the sanctum sanctorum or garbhagriha. The sanctuary of Suvarnameru is supposed to be initially worked by a broker named Neulisa. It is said, that the lingam of Suvarnameru Shiva was situated on the right bank of stream Tel in a town called Suvarnapali.


The popular story of the Gold coin Rain is associated with this Place, with this Temple when an ardent devotee asked the lord for help, so the name is Sonepur or Subarnapur. The Place attracts thousands of visitors and Pilgrimages for its scenic beauty as this temple is situated just on the Bank of Tel River.


Maha Shivaratri and Kartika Purnima are the festivals celebrated here
