Thiruvangad Sri Rama Temple - Thalassery

Thiruvangad Sree Rama Swamy Temple is located in the eastern part of Thalassery in the Kannur district of Kerala State.

Sri Rama is the main deity of this temple. The deity is 6 feet in height.

Here Lord Rama is installed by Lord Parasurama and is depicted in Poorna Roopa with four arms carrying the Conch, Disc, Mace, and Lotus.

It is one of the five major shrines dedicated to Lord Sree Rama in Kerala State. The other four are at Thirnayamkudam (vaikom), Triprayar, Thiruvilluamala, and Kadalur.

This temple was built in the Kerala style of architecture.

This temple was built 400 years ago.

Sree Ramaswami Temple has a Gopuram between the Chira and the temple which reportedly was a large Elaborate structure. The Sanctum sanctorum(Garbhalaya) faces East in a square shape and is two-tiered (Dwi-thala). The temple has a copper-plated sree kovil. The walls are decorated with terra-cotta motifs of numerous human figures and the temple was constructed using Wood.

It is located on an elevated plot of 2.75 hectares with an adjoining temple tank known as Chira which extends over an area of one hectare, This well-maintained temple has excellent wood carvings, terracotta art work, mural paintings carved on wooden planks in the ceilings are a repository of art treasure. the big temple tank is a rare one and useful to the devotees.

According to the legendary story, this shrine was consecrated by a Rishi by the name of Swetha Muni. The legend is that Agasthya Muni on his way to Kaveri River for offering his customary ablutions was once confronted by two demons namely Neelan and Swethan. The Muni cursed them, On request for penance they were advised to perform Tapas at two Siva Temples. They were later known as Neelarshi and Swetharshi. The places where Neelarshi and Swetharshi performed their Tapas came to be known as Neeleswaram and Swetharanyapuram respectively. The latter was a dense forest at that time. The present name Thiruvangad must have been derived from this connection. It is said that Swetharshi consecrated a Vishnu temple also(dedicated to Sree Rama) at the site where he performed his Tapas. A part of the temple was damaged by Tipu Sultan's troops in the 18th century but the temple itself is believed to have been saved from destruction.
