Sri Kamakshi Ammavari Temple - Jonnawada

Jonnawada is located on the banks of the Pennar River. This temple was built in the year 1150 A.D.

Goddess Kamakshi is an Incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy.

Aadi Shankaracharya found that the idol is a manifestation of Goddess Parvathi and installed Lord Shiva in this temple.

To perform Yagna, Kasyapa set up three Yagna Gundams, namely Daskhanagni, Aahananiyagni, and Aaraspathyagni. Lord Shiva came out of the Yagna Gundam in the shape of a Linga since he was so happy with Kasyapa's Yagna. The location of the Yagna is referred to as Jannada in the SKANDAPURANA; this name later evolved into Jonnavada. When Goddess Parvathi eventually found Lord Siva in Jonnavada, he asked her to live at this location. Goddess took on the form of an idol at his request and moved into the Penna River. The temple was renamed Sri Jonnawada Kamakshi Mallikarjuna Swamy temple after that. This temple faces the East direction. This temple has a Five tier Gopuram carved with images of gods and goddesses with Five Kalasams on top made out of gold. A Dhwaja Stambham stands in the temple courtyard.

Mahamuni Kasyapa Brahma in Tretayuga performed a yagna to please Lord Mallikarjuna and hence it is called Yagnavatika Jonnawada. Sri Mallikarujua Swamy & Kamakshi amma gives to several devotees their wishes, as their godhead, and since that time, he has been conferring boons & their blessings on the devotees. Kamakshi is known to be a rebirth of Shakti. Brama Rusi Shri Kasyap Mahamuni had come to earth also known as Bhoolokam to conduct Yagna & chose the place of North Vedadri to be the Yagna Vatika. When he completed his yagna, an illuminated light appeared which illuminated the whole of the earth.

After entering the temple, one will see the Dhwajasthambam (Holy Pillar), Balipeetam, and Kalyan mandap (where marriages are performed). On the numerous pillars inside, the temple's history was inscribed. It is believed that anyone who bathes in Kasyapa Theertham, a lake next to the temple, will be forgiven of any sins they have committed in this life.

Devotees also believe that a night when getting sleep in the temple, they will be blessed with good fortune.

    1. No direct buses are available to Jonnawada temple, the best way to reach the temple is by auto or cab or by own vehicle.

From the Golagamudi bus, a facility is available to RTC (main bus stand), from there you can go by auto to Jonnawada temple.

      Thank You.
