Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple
is Positioned in the Pathanamitta district of Kerala State. Sabarimala Sree Dharma
Sastha Temple is the most famous and Prominent among all the Sastha Temples.
Here Lord is installed by
Parasurama and we can see the lord here in sitting form both his legs bent and
pressed on the floor and his dhoti tied tightly around his knees.
The temple is situated on
a hilltop at an altitude of 1260 mts above sea level. And surrounded by
mountains and dense forest.
The temple remains open for 127 days a year.
This temple has holy 18
steps. According to beliefs, the first 5 steps signify the five indriyas or the
senses, the following 8 the ragas (tatwa, kama, krodha, moha, lobha, Madha,
mastsraya, and ahamkara) the next 3 gunas (satwa, rajas and thamas) followed by
vidya and avidya.
This temple was built in the 11th century and renovated in the year 1950.
