Sri Jagannath Temple Timings – Puri
Sri Jagannath temple is located in Puri in the state
of Odhisa.
Lord Jagannath is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, other
deities are his elder brother Balabhadra and Sister Subhadra.
All of them are wooden idols sit on a throne.
Balabhadra is six feet tall, Jagannath is five feet tall, and Subhadra is four feet tall.
Here the deities are made from wood and is
ceremoniously replaced every twelve or nineteen years by an exact replica.
There are many shrines in the temple complex among them Vimala temple is considered as one of the most important Shaktipeetas where Goddess Sati’s Navel fell.
The flags tied to the temple’s Neela Chakra are
changed every day at Sunset in a ritual that’s been going on for 800 years.
Koili Baikuntha where Lord Krishna was believed to
have been cremated after being accidentally killed by hunter Jara Savara. It’s
in the northwest corner of the temple.
During the Nabakalebar ritual, new idols of Lord
Jagannath are carved out of wood and the old ones are buried there.
A small museum called Niladri Vihari near the western gate,
dedicated to Lord Jagannath and the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
The world’s largest kitchen where the mahaprasad is
cooked in clay pots. Apparently, the kitchen produces enough food to feed one
lakh people each day.
Hathidwara, Vyaghradwara and Ashwadwara are the three
other entrances from where people can enter the temple.
First temple was built in 12th Century.
This temple is famous for its Rathayatra.
Many great saints were closely associated with the
temple.
Non – Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple.
This temple is also among the holiest Chardham temples
the other three are Rameswaram, Badrinath and Dwaraka.
Important festivals celebrated are Rathayatra, Sayana
Yatra, Daksinayana, Parshwa Parivartana, Seva Utthapana, Pravarana Sasthi,
Pushyavisheka, Makara Sankranti, Dola Yatra, Damanaka Chaturdashi, Akshaya Trutiya
& Chandan Yatra and Neeladri Mahodaya.
