Sri Theertha Giriswarar Swamy
Temple is located at Theertahmalai a small village in the Dharmapuri district
of Tamilnadu State.
Theertha Giriswarar Swamy is
an incarnation of Lord Shiva, who is Swayambhu here.
This temple was built in the 7th century and renovated in the year 1014.
Lord Sri Rama performed Shiva puja at two sacred places,
the first is Rameswaram and the other is Theerthamalai.
Vayu Theertham and Varuna
Theertham are on the hill’s western side, and Indira Theertham is on the east.
Hanuman and Yama theerthams are on the north and south respectively. Vasishta
Theertham is at the top of the hill. This is a divine hill surrounded by holy
theerthas. Sri Rama Theertham was brought out from the rocks and herbals.
Bathing in the theertha chanting Sri Rama Jayam relieves the devotee of all
his/her sins.
According to Puranas, Kumara
Theertham was created for Abhishek to Lord Muruga when he was crowned as the
Supreme Commander of the forces of the Devas. Bathing here or at least spilling
the drops blesses the devotee with knowledge and wisdom. Gowri Theertham was
created for Mother Ambica, she worshipped Lord with this theertha and got his
hand in the wedding, and became part of his body.
Agasthya Theertham is a
blessing of Lord Shiva to cure the sage of ulcer troubles and it is said that theertha contains copper and herbal properties. Agni theertham relieved
Agni himself of the sins he earned due to his passionate love of women. This balances
the heat in the body and is a wonderful medicine for cold attacks, tuberculosis, etc.
The temple's most well-known celebrations include the 10-day Masi Brahmmotsavam in February and March, which features a procession of
the presiding Lord, a car festival on the seventh day, a wedding festival on
the fifth day, and the Sathaparana festival, which features the Lord in a
reclining position on the tenth day; Abhishek pujas with 365 liters of milk on
the Chithirai new year day, which typically falls on April On Saturdays and
Sundays, there are usually a lot of devotees visiting the temple. Pradosha is
practiced with commitment. The temple also celebrates New Year's Day in Tamil
and English.
