Karadaiyan Nombu
- Karadaiyan Nombu is celebrated particularly in the state of Tamilnadu. It is observed on the first day of Panguni month.
- It is also known as Savitri Nombu Vratam, an important festival for married women in Tamilnadu.
- Karadai means a special naivedya and nombu means Upavasam or vratam.
- This vrat is done in the remembrance of Satyavan – Savitri story. It is also observed as Vat Savitri vrat in Some areas.
- According to Hindu Mythology Savitri was a princess who with her utmost devotion towards her husband Satyavan, saved him from the clutches of death.
- It is observed by married women for the long life of their husbands and whereas unmarried girls observe to get a good husband.
- Fasting is an important ritual observed on this day.
- The fast is broken in the late evening
- Women worship Goddess Gowri on this day, special mantras are chanted.
- Women wear yellow color thread referred to as Karadai Nombu Saradu. A small flower is also tied to thread and this thread is tied to the husbands.
