Sri Bagheswari Devi Temple – Bongaigaon
Sri Bagheswari Devi Temple is located in Bongaigaon city
of Assam State.
She is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati.
It is one of the 51 Shakti Peetha temples
The temple is so named
due to the nearby Bagheswari Pahar.
There exists a rock-cut
Ganesha of the medieval period, along with architectural components of a stone
temple datable to 10th -11th CE.
The Bhageswari Hill is an
ancient temple of Lord Shiva inside a stone cave flanked on either side by
another 2 temples. The two temples are Bhageswari Devi and the temple of Baba
TarakNath.
According to Hindu
mythology of this place, the Trishul of Maa Durga fell when Lord Vishnu cut her
body into pieces with his chakra to calm down lord Shiva.
It has great importance during Durga ashtami which is observed during Durga Pooja one of the biggest festivals of Assam after Bihu( Baisagu) which comes during the October season where the buffalos are sacrificed and devotees from several parts of Assam visit this temple to witness its power of religious rituals.
