According to the legends, King Nanda Chakravarthy used
to visit Kasi every day at 4 O'clock in the morning and return back before dawn
using a Mantra Shakti. The King told them where he was going everyday detail to
his wife as she insisted on knowing about his absence in the morning. The next day, the King took his wife along with him to visit Kasi. The queen was having
her monthly and the Mantra Shakti lost its power due to that. The Brahmins
helped the King and Queen and in return, the King promised to give the Brahmins
land whenever they approached him. Some years later, when Kasi was hit by famine
the Brahmins came to meet King Nanda Chakravarthy to give them the land as
promised. However, the King forgot the promise and abused the Brahmins. The
Brahmins prayed to Goddess Sri Chamundeswari Mata to come down to Nandavaram as
the lonely witness for the king's promise. Pleased with the prayers of
Brahmins, the Goddess appeared before them. The King realized his mistake and
apologized to the Goddess and the Brahmins. King Nanda Chakravarthy gave land to
the Brahmins as promised and built a temple for Goddess Sri Chamundeswari Mata.
