Akshaya Navami
- Akshaya Navami is observed on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha in Kartik month in North India.
- it is also known as Amla Navami.
- On this day, the Amla tree is worshipped as it is considered to be the abode of all Gods and Goddesses.
- The popular belief is that the Treta Yuga started on this day.
- Some people refer to the day as the beginning of the Satyuga.
Lord Surya (Sun God) worshipped Goddess Durga on this day and was rewarded with properties that have him. Therefore it is believed that what is given on the day will never be destroyed but will only result in growth.
Goddess Jagadhatri is worshipped on the day in West Bengal. An important event on Akshay Navmi is the distribution of alms and receiving of presents.
In North Indian states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, ‘Parbhat Pheri, a procession dedicated to Lord Krishna and Sun God, is performed in the mornings.
Sankirtan and bhajans are sung during the Parbhat Pheri of Akshay Navami.
Vrindavan Mathura Parikarma is also observed on this day.
Things to do :
- Devotees get up early and take a bath in the Ganges and other Holy rivers before sunrise.
- After the bath, elaborate pujas and rituals are performed on the banks of the river, under the guidance of a priest.
- Women observe a strict fast on Akshaya Navami.
- They pass the day without eating a single grain of food and involve themselves in various bhajans and kirtans.
- In some regions, people also worship the ‘Amla’ (Indian Gooseberry) tree on this day.
- One should eat Amla fruit on this day for good health and also donate some fruits.
- Charity is a very important event of this day.
- It is believed that any good deeds done on Akshaya Navami never perish. Making secret donations on this day is also of great importance.
- One must donate as much as possible as per their financial condition to any eligible person.
