Sri Siva Temple – Tripangode
Sri Siva Temple is
located at Triprangode near Tirur in the Malappuram district of Kerala.
It is one of the most
important temples to visit in northern Kerala.
The major deity is Lord
Shiva's swayambu lingam, which faces west. To the left of Lord Shiva is a
shrine devoted to Goddess Parvati.
Within the complex of the
temple, there are four other shrines devoted to Lord Shiva. One is referred to
as the "moolasthanam," which translates as the Lord's first seat.
"Karanayil Temple" is the name of the establishment.
The three stages that the
Lord took to kill Yama are symbolized by the other three Shrines.
The temple complex
consists of five ponds, three located within the premises.
This temple is famous for having three kinds of sreekovils, or sanctum sanctorum, common in Kerala.
The main shrine is a
two-storied one in 'Gajaprishta' shape, literally meaning the shape of the back
of an elephant, and is very large in size. It has a southward extension, which
encloses the shrine of Goddess Parvati, thus having the concept of 'Ardhanarishwara.
There is a 'namaskara
mandapam' in front of the sreekovil, used by the Brahmins for reciting Vedas,
Shiva Sahasranama, etc
Lord Ganesha's idol is on the south-western door, facing east.
There are Shrines dedicated
to Lord Vishnu, Lord Vettakkorumakan, Goddess Bhadrakali and Lord Ayyappa
Swamy.
