Sri Margabandeeswarar
Swamy temple is located at Virinjipuram village, near Vellore city in the state
of Tamilnadu. This temple was built in 13th century by Cholas and
renovations were done by Vijayanagara kings in 19th and 20th
Century.
Margabandeeswarar swamy
is the main deity. He is an incarnation of lord shiva. Here swamy is swayambu
(Self – manifested). Goddess Maragadhambikai is consort of lord shiva.
- This temple is located on the banks of the river Palar.
- The sunrays fall on the deity during the tamil month Panguni (Feb-Mar)
- 1008 small lingams are enshrined in a single Maha Lingam
- Arunachala Puranam, Shiva Rahasyam, Kanchi Puranam have described this temple.
- This is also birth place of renowed vedic scholar and shiva devotee Sri Appaya Dikshithar.
