Virupaksheewarar Temple is located at Mylapore in Chennai city of Tamilnadu State. Virupaksheewarar is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.


This is one of the seven Sapthasthana (Saptha meaning seven) temples for Shiva in Mylapore worshiped by the Saptha rishis – Adri (Theerthapaleeswarar Temple), Brigu (Malleeswarar Temple), Kutsa (Virupaksheeswarar Temple), Vashishta (Karaneeswarar Temple), Gautama (Valeeswarar Temple), Kasyapa (Kapaleeswarar Temple) and Angirasa (Velleeswarar Temple).

 

This temple has 5 tiered Rajagopuram. This temple was built in 17th Century.


This temple has a beautiful tank which serves as a rain water harvesting place for the neighbourhood. The belief is that a dip on this will cure the diseases.
