Sri Karni Mata Temple - Bikaner (Deshnoke)
Karni Mata temple is situated
at Deshnoke, in Bikaner district in the state of Rajasthan.
Karni Mata is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti.
This temple is also known as the Temple of Rats. It is home to 20000 rats all in one place.
Here rats are fed with grains, milk, and coconut shells from large metal bowls. Water the rats drink from is considered holy, and eating the rat's leftovers is said to bring good fortune to those making the pilgrimage to the temple.
This temple was built in the 14th Century.
The temple was built in the Rajasthan style of architecture.
This temple is located on
Machla Hills, near Deendayal Upadhyay Park amid natural beauty. One can reach the temple either by stairs
starting from Manikyalal Verma Park or by ropeway.
Legend has it that Karni
Mata was born in 1387 A.D. in the village of Suwap near Phalodi in the Jodhpur district of
Rajasthan. She was born as the seventh daughter in the Charan family and worshiped
as a reincarnation of the goddess Durga. It is believed that she restored the life of
her dead son who reincarnated as a rat and since then all her relatives have taken birth as rats after death and have stayed together as a family.
There are white rats in this temple that are considered holy and as per popular belief, feeding them brings fortune. Yet another belief is that visiting Devi Maa and worshipping her during morning and evening hours fulfills wishes and adds longevity to life.
Karni Mata fair is held twice a year. The first is during Chaitra Navratri.
The Second is during Sharad Navratri.
