Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Perumal Temple – Thirupparkadal
Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Perumal Temple is located
in Thirupparkadal in Vellore district of Tamilnadu
It is one of the 108
Abhimana Kshetram of Lord Vishnu
As per tradition, this is
one of the locations where Vishnu slept atop his mount Adishesha in order to
prevent the torrential Saraswati river, also known as Vegavati, from disturbing
and destroying the yagna that Brahma was performing in order to obtain the
divine blessing at Kanchipuram.
Three locations are
thought to be where Vishnu is believed to rest on Adishesha: Pallikonda (As
Uthara Ranganathar), close to Vellore; Thirupparkadal; and lastly, Kanchipuram,
where the Tiruvekka (As Yathothrakari) temple is located.
The Rajagopuram is in
dilapidated state. The Tank dedicated is called as Pundarika Pushkarini
Another mandapam, with
shrines for Thumbikkai Alvar, Nammalvar, Madurakavi Alvar, Thirumangai Alvar,
and Bhoothath Alvar, is located at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum.
Inside the inner sanctum,
the presiding deity Venkatesa Perumal stands on Avudaiyar (Shiva lingam) within
an abhayamudra.
There are other deities on
the premises are Alamelumangai Thayar, Lord Hanuman, Garudalwar, Rukmini and
Satyabhama.
Vishnu wanted to fulfill
the desire of the Vaishnava devotee, and transformed himself as an old
Vaishnava. He enquired Pundarika regarding his sorrow. Pundarika shared his
disappointment with the old Vaishnava. The old Vaishnava insisted that the
deity in the sannidhi was indeed Vishnu's, and accompanied the sage
Pundarika to the temple, before disappearing. Pundarika walked right into the
temple's inner sanctum and saw Perumal in his abhayamudra, standing on top
of the Shiva lingam. This was on the occasion of Ekadashi, and from that day,
the presiding deity has been called Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal.
The temple celebrates
rituals on Vaikunda Ekadasi, which falls in December or January, and on all
Pradosham days, the thirteenth day of both new and full moons.
