Sri Babulnath Temple - Mumbai
Sri Babulnath Temple is a historic temple located on a tiny hillock at
the end of Marine Drive next to Girgaum Chowpatty in Mumbai, 5 kilometers from
Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station. It is both one of Mumbai's oldest
temples and a well-liked destination for pilgrims.
Sri Babulnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The
primary Shivlinga and other statues in the temple were initially dedicated by
the area's Hindu ruler Raja Bhimdev in the 12th century. The temple was lost
and eventually buried over time. The idols were uncovered (or discovered) in
the 18th century. Five ancient idols were unearthed when they were
rediscovered, including the main Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati, and
another. The first four of these are in the temple. The fifth one, which was
damaged when it was dug out in the 18th century, was submerged in the sea.
The temple is regarded as being extremely unusual
and fascinating. It has a vantage point over the Arabian Sea that is almost
1,000 feet above sea level. The pleasant surroundings and stunning city view
are enjoyed by devotees here.
The temple is visited by a large number of devotees on Monday which is
the occasion of the Mahashivratri festival.
