Sri Dwarakadish Temple – Mathura
Sri Dwarakadish Temple is
located in Mathura city of Uttar Pradesh State.
Lord Krishna who is the presiding
deity, is made up of black marble.
Goddess Radharani is the consort
of Lord Krishna, made up of white marble.
In this temple, lord
Krishna is worshipped as dwarakadish or Dwarka Nath.
The temple is facing the East direction and was built in the Rajasthani style of architecture. The very first
thing that you see are the five rows of beautifully carved pillars, which
divide the whole courtyard into three different segments. An array of beautiful
ceiling paintings showcasing the various aspects of the Lord's life and the
beautiful Rajasthani architectural designs and carvings make the complex look
even more magnanimous. Beautiful pictures of all gods and goddesses on the
walls.
The temple has large premises with the main building enclosed by a magnificently carved Rajasthani-style entrance with steep steps leading to the temple courtyard. In the central
courtyard, a platform is built up and lined up with three rows of richly carved
pillars that support the ceiling which is also beautifully painted. Another
small temple of another form of Lord Krishna Shaligram is also built within
the temple courtyard.
This temple was built in
the year 1814.
The main festival of the
temple is called Hindola festival which is celebrated annually in the month of
Shravana which usually falls in July-August. It is a 13-day long festival.
During this festival, the temple is beautifully decorated in theme colors. The
icons of Dwarkadhish and Radharani are brought out of their sanctum and are
placed in beautifully decorated Jhoola (swing) adorned with golden and silver
ornaments for the special darshan.
Besides the Hindola festival, the temple also celebrates Janmashtami, Radhastami, Holi, and Diwali with great
fervor.
