Goddess Durga Beejasan Mata is depicted as sitting atop the demon Rakta Beeja.
The tremendous deeds of Goddess Durga, which are now known as Shri Durga
Shaptasati, are described in the Markendeya Puran. The chivalrous form of Durga
during her valiant battle against the demon Rakta Beeja is described in the
eighth chapter of Shri Durga Shaptasati. This demon had received a very special
kind of blessing. Each drop of blood that left his body and fell to Earth would
transform into a Rakta Beeja with the same strength and ability. Millions of
Rakta Beeja demons were created as a result. In the end, the Goddess made the
decision to prevent these devils' blood from reaching Earth. Thus, she
brandished torches.
The main festivals
celebrated here are Navaratri. During the nine-day Navaratri festival, fare is
also organized here every year.
