Rules for Navratri Akhand Jyoti

It is an ongoing tradition in temples and households to light oil lamps in morning and in the evening.


During Navratri to honour Goddess durga devotees light Akhand Jyoti.


Jyoti symbolizes knowledge, purity, good luck and prosperity.


The Jyoti remains ignited for nine days.


Rules or Niyama


  • Must use brass or silver or earthen lamp
  • Use sesame oil or mustard oil or cow ghee for fuelling Akhand Jyoti
  • Must use a long wick to remain ignited for long time.
  • Akhand Jyoti must keep away from the direction of window.
  • Must regularly check the oil quantity in the lamp.
  • The over burnt portion of the wick must remove gently
  • The Akanda Jyoti must be always on a raised platform.
