Difference between Kumbha Mela and Maha Kumbh Mela

There are four types of Kumbh Melas: Purna Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, Maha Kumbh, and Kumbh Mela.

Maha Kumbh is going to be held in Prayagraj and will start from January 13 and conclude on February 26, 2025. Throngs of pilgrims come from all over the world to be a part of this religious gathering. Approximately 40 crore devotees will be attending the mela this year.

Deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela’s origins are linked to the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning) story - where gods and demons worked together to obtain the amrit.

Difference Between Maha Kumbh And Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years. This extraordinary event marks the completion of 12 cycles of the 12-year Kumbh Mela. As per devotees, taking a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers during this period will enhance their spiritual power and also help in attaining salvation.

On the other hand, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated once every 3 years. It is held at four locations: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. The scale of this event is smaller as compared to the Maha Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh.

However, it is important to note that each form of Kumbh Mela is deeply significant for spiritual growth and purification. The Maha Kumbh Mela remains the most important - attracting the largest number of pilgrims.
