Durga Maa is the supreme God and primary diety in Shaktism. She got her name after killing the demon Mahishasura. She is represenetd as "shakti" or the female principle of divine energy, and is also the nurturer of fertility and strength in the material world.

Durga ma is presented as 'shakti' she is the divine principle of energy who also has the power of a male god to save the universe.

Riding a lion Durga is a symbol of power. This indicated that she has supreme power and protects virtue while destroying evil. 

The trishul in her hand is a representation of three qualities. Namely Satwa ( the ideal state of mind ), Rajas ( energy that drives ambition) and Tamas ( laziness and stress). To attain peace she balances these three energies. 



Durga is also the significant half of Shiva. He is the form and she is the expression. Shiva is the father of the universe and she is the mother. 

The three eyes of Durga give her the name of Triyambake which is the represenation of Agni, Surya and Chandra. 

In the west it is celebrated as Garbha-Dandiya, North celebrates as Ramlila and South as Golu or Bonalu while East it is known as Durga Puja. 

The Goddess slayed Mahishasura even though he displayed a variety of tricks and took many forms to deceive her. 



Initially Durga Puja was celebrated as Basanti Puja during spring. The auumn ritual is different from the usual one and is also known as 'akal-Bodhan' or out of season worship.
