Puri Jagannath Ratha
Yatra is annually held in the city of Puri in Odisha State.
It is celebrated for 9
days
It is associated with
Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his aunt’s house.
Here Lord Jagannath is
worshipped with sister Subhadra and Brother Balabhadra.
Lord Jagannath means the
lord of the universe.
Every year a new wooden
rath is designed, and the collection of Rath starts on the day of Vasant
Panchami.
The construction of Rath
starts from Akshaya Tritiya.
It takes about two months
to complete all three chariots dedicated to three gods.
Lord Jagannath – Nandighosh
with 16 wheels
Lord Balabhadra – Tala Dwaja
with 14 wheels
Devi Subhadra – Darpa dalan
with 12 wheels
Rituals of Rathayatra start before 18 days.
Snana Purnima
Lord Jagannath Lord Bala
Bhadra Devi Subhadra is given a ceremonial bath known as Snana yatra which is
observed on Jyeshta Purnima. It is called maha snana.
Ansari
After snana Purnima the
wooden idols are kept secluded till the date of the procession.
Chera Pahara
The Chariots are placed
facing north at Singh Dwar of the temple, the king of Orissa cleans the Chariot
with a broom of Golden handle, cleans the path also, and Sprinkle sandalwood.
The procession starts on the Dwitiya day of Shukla paksha of Jyeshta month. It
reaches gundicha mata temple.
Bahuda Yatra
From Gundicha Temple
procession back home is known as Bahuda Yatra it takes place on the 8th day.
Suna Vesa
When it reaches back to
Jagannath Temple deities are dressed in new clothes and with joy are placed
back inside the temple.
