Kiranotsav at Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Temple
Kiranotsav is perhaps the most unique and popular festival
of the Kolhapur Mahalakshmi shrine. It is said that the Sun God (Surya Dev) pays homage to the Goddess for
three consecutive days thrice a year.
There's an opening on one of the walls from where the
rays of the rising Sun fall on the Goddess's feet, chest, and entire body
during different times of the year.
- For instance, the Sun rays fall directly on the feet on January 31st & November 9th.
- Subsequently, the Sun rays fall directly on the chest of the Mother Goddess on February 1st & November 10th
- And finally, on February 2nd and November 11th, the Sun rays fall directly on the entire body.
