Holy Rivers of India
Rivers have
not only been a lifeline to the people of India but have also
served as their spiritual abode in various ways. That is why rivers have always
been revered in India and are believed to carry medicinal, healing, and
spiritual powers in their waters.
The River Ganges
The Ganges River is one of the most sacred rivers in India. It originates from the
Himalayas and joins the Bay of Bengal after flowing through Uttarakhand, Uttar
Pradesh, and Bihar. The Ganga is worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism and
is the most sacred river in India.
Godavari River
Godavari River is the most important river in South
India. The river is sacred to Hindus and is also known as the Dakshin Ganga or
Ganga of South India. Several ancient temples are located on the banks of
Godavari.
Godavari River originates in the Trimbak hills in the Nashik
district of Maharashtra. It flows into the Bay of Bengal after flowing through
Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
Yamuna river
Yamuna river is the third holiest river in India. It
originates from Yamunotri in the Himalayas and joins Triveni Sangam in
Allahabad. It is one of the largest tributaries of the Ganges River. The cities
of Delhi, Agra, and Mathura are situated on the banks of this holy river.
Narmada river
Narmada river is also known as Maa Rewa in India
and is also one of the ten holy rivers of
India. It originates from the Maikal ranges in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, and
joins the Bay of Bengal flowing through Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The basin
and valley of Narmada also house several important religious places and Ghats
along the course such as Amarkantak, Omkareshwar, and Maheshwar.
Krishna river
Krishna River is a major river in South India. It
originates from Mahabaleshwar in the state of Maharashtra and flows through
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Brahmaputra River
The Brahmaputra River is one of the longest and holiest rivers in India. After leaving Mansarovar, this river flows through Arunachal
Pradesh, Assam, and joins the adjoining bay. It is known as the Tsangpo River in
China, the Jamuna River in Bangladesh, and the Dihang River in Arunachal
Pradesh.
Saraswati river
Saraswati River is an ancient river, associated with the
Vedic era. It originates from the Shivalik ranges, the Himalayas, and joins Triveni
Sangam. Triveni Sangam in Allahabad is the confluence of 3 rivers, one of which
is the Saraswati river.
Shipra river
Shipra River is a major river flowing in Madhya Pradesh.
The holy city of Ujjain is situated on its banks. The Kumbh Mela festival is
held in Ujjain every 12 years on the banks of this river.
Kaveri River
Kaveri is a major river in South India, which originates
from the Brahmagiri hills and passes through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The
beautiful Shivasamudram Falls is the second largest waterfall in India is on
this river. Tiruchirappalli, a city situated on the banks of the river Kaveri,
is a famous pilgrimage center for Hindus.
Tapti River
The Tapti River originates in the Betul district in the
state of Madhya Pradesh. The Tapti River flows through Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
