Durva Ashtami
- Durva Ashtami is observed on Shukla paksha Ashtami tithi in Bhadrapada month.
- It is dedicated to worship durva grass.
- As per legends few strands of hair that fell from Lord Vishnu’s arm became durva grass.
- After the Samudra Manthan when the Asuras and Devas were carrying the ‘Amrit’, it is believed that a few drops of Amrit fell on Durva Grass and since then it has become auspicious and immortal.
- The significance of Durva Grass was also explained to King Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna himself.
- Performing Durva Ashtami puja will be blessed to keep his legacy for generations.
- It is most popular in west Bengal and eastern regions of India, in Bengal it is called Durvashtami Brata.
Things to do :
- Get up before sunrise, take an early bath, and start the puja rituals
- Special puja and rituals are observed for durva grass, Women also keep fast on this day.
- They also worship Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha on this day.
