Bhadrapada Purnima

  The full moon day of the Bhadrapada month is celebrated as Bhadrapad Purnima.  Bhadrapad Purnima being a full moon night has a lot of importance. This is seen as a month of the retreating monsoons in India. The Bhadrapada month is considered to be special for Lord Vishnu. That is why, Lord Vishnu is worshipped on the full moon night of this month. Ananta Vratam is dedicated to Lord Ananta Padmanabha Swamy. It is observed on the fourteenth day of Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapada month (Bhadra Shukla Chaturdashi). Vishwakarma Puja

  Vishwakarma Day is celebrated to worship Lord  Vishwakarma, He was an hindu god for  architecture.  He is also called the divine  carpenter , as mentioned in the  Rig Veda. According to the religious texts, Lord Vishwakarma is known as "Devashilpi" or "The Architect of Gods" . The festival is observed primarily in  factories  and industrial areas, often on the  shop floor .   Sankranti is the day when the Sun changes its position from one zodiac to the other Kanya Sankranti is when the Sun moves from Simha Rashi (Leo Zodiac sign) to Kanya Rashi. It is the Purattasi month as per the Tamil calendar. Kanni Masam falls on this day according to the calendar of Kerala. Kalki Dwadasi

Onam

Onam is a festival celebrated by the people of Kerala. It is the rice harvest festival in Kerala It is the most important and one of the biggest festivals celebrated for 10 days. It falls during the month of Chingam (August–September) during Thiruvonam Nakshatram. The first day, Atham, and the tenth day, Thiruvonam the most important of all. The characteristic floral designs known as ‘pookkalam’ are symbolic of this festival. People gift and wear new clothes known as 'Onakkodi'. Grand feasts are prepared on this occasion. This is known as 'onam sadya’.  A characteristic sweet dish called ‘payasam’ is a must during Onam. It is made of rice, milk, sugar, and coconut. Vamana Jayanti

  Vaman Jayanti is observed on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi (the 12th day of the waxing moon period) of Bhadrapada month. This festival is also known as Vaman Dwadashi. Vamana is the 5th Avatar of lord Vishnu, The incarnation of Vaman Avatar was to help King Mahabali who lost his power. In Kerala, the Onam festival is also celebrated in remembrance of King Mahabali. On this day devotees worship Maha Vishnu early in the morning with proper rituals. Donating food, rice, curd, etc is considered to be auspicious on this day. In the evening of the festival day, the devotees should listen to Story of Vamana along with the family members and distribute prasadam among everyone. Parsva Ekadashi

  Parsava Ekadashi is also known as Parvartini or Parivartana Ekadashi ,  Vamana Ekadashi , or Jayanti Ekadashi.  It falls during the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha)of the Bhadrapada month. It is believed that by observing the Parsava Ekadashi vrat one is relieved from all the sins that he had done. Devotees also believe that Lord Vishnu had changed his position of sleep on this day - from left side to right side.  Hence, this Ekadashi is also called Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi. Durva Ashtami

  Durva Ashtami is observed on Shukla paksha Ashtami tithi in Bhadrapada month. It is dedicated to worship durva grass. As per legends few strands of hair that fell from Lord Vishnu’s arm became durva grass. After the Samudra Manthan when the Asuras and Devas were carrying the ‘Amrit’, it is believed that a few drops of Amrit fell on Durva Grass and since then it has become auspicious and immortal. The significance of Durva Grass was also explained to King Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna himself. Performing Durva Ashtami puja will be blessed to keep his legacy for generations. Maha Lakshmi Vrat

  Maha Lakshmi Vrat is observed for 16 days from the Ashtami of Bhadrapad-Shukla Paksha to the Ashtami of Ashwin-Krishna Paksha. These dates fall around September each year. This is a very powerful time to offer concentrated prayer to Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity. Legend According to Hindu mythology, there are various legends associated with this festival. Rishi Panchami

  Rishi Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami (Fifth Day) of Shukla Paksha (Waxing moon period) in the Hindu Month of Bhadrapada.  On Rishi Panchami, a ritual bath is taken in holy rivers, ponds, or other water masses. Hands and mouth are washed 108 times. Lord Ganesh, Navagraha( nine planetary Gods), Saptarshis (seven Sages), and Arundathi are worshipped. Women offer the 'Prasad' to Gods and wash their husbands' feet. By taking one more ritual bath in sacred water, devotees feel blessed that their all sins are cleansed away. Sri Munthi Vinayagar Temple – Coimbatore

  Sri Munthi Vinayagar Temple is located in the neighborhood of Puliakulam in Coimbatore of Tamilnadu The temple holds the largest Vinayagar idol in Asia. The idol of the Lord stands about 20 feet tall and is over 11 feet broad sculpted from a single massive rock by 21 highly skilled sculptors.   Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapada, which falls around August or September. The preparation starts one month in advance, with great enthusiasm, to celebrate this auspicious occasion. The festival starts with the installation of beautifully sculpted Ganesha idols in homes and mandaps. These idols are decorated beautifully and show religious themes. Gowri Habba

This festival is celebrated just a day before the celebrations of the Ganesh Chaturthi. It is also known as Gowri Habba or Gauri Ganesha. It is observed on Bhadrapada Shuddha Tritiya. Polala Amavasya

  It is observed on the ‘Amavasya’ (no moon day) during the ‘Shravana’ masam in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also called Pithori Amavasya. Goddess Poleramma is worshipped today.
